Top Five Reasons Your Business Needs EDR

For decades, we've relied on Antivirus software to scan and protect endpoints in our networks. As threats have advanced over the years however, traditional A/V is starting to show it's age and is struggling to keep up with modern attacks.

Fortunately, a solution is available which can help not only cover the gaps traditional A/V cannot, but is also faster to react and even be proactive. That solution is called Endpoint Detection and Response, or EDR. Today we'll look at five quick points where EDR is better than traditional Antivirus solutions.

Various backup media devices spread across a table.

Advanced Threat Detection:

EDR can identify more sophisticated threats that traditional antivirus systems might miss. It uses advanced techniques like behavioral analysis to spot unusual activities of individual processes or user accounts. These are techniques you don't get with a traditional A/V which uses databases of known bad signatures.

Real-Time Monitoring:

EDR continuously monitors endpoints in real-time, allowing for immediate detection and response to threats. Traditional antivirus meanwhile, typically relies on periodic scans or performance-impacting "on demand" scans whenever a user opens a file or program.

Comprehensive Visibility:

EDR provides a detailed view of all activities on endpoints, helping to understand the full scope of an attack and the root cause. Traditional antivirus usually focuses on known threats and may not offer this level of insight, instead focusing mainly on the symptoms.

Automated Response:

EDR can automatically respond to detected threats by isolating affected systems and/or removing malicious files. Traditional antivirus often requires more manual intervention for such actions and issue resolution.

Threat Hunting:

EDR allows security teams to proactively search for potential threats within the network, even if they haven’t triggered any alerts. Traditional antivirus is more reactive, dealing with threats only after they are detected.

EDR is Antivirus on steroids

Looking at the highlights above, it's plain to see EDR is the next generation in endpoint security. When paired with a proper SEIM and SOC, it leads to an extremely well monitored environment which can stop attacks before they get started and help prevent major losses and stoppages in your organization.
